• Spring has begun in our vineyards!

    September 30, 2019

¡Comenzó la primavera en nuestros viñedos!

During this season, after their rest, our vineyards begin a new process of budding, flowering and setting, fundamental stages in the development of the fruits of the vines that begin to prepare for the long-awaited harvest. In fact, we already have our first shoots!

Warmer days and longer, brighter evenings, ideal for enjoying the new colours and aromas brought by the long-awaited spring that arrived in Chile on 23 September and will continue until the end of December. Winter is behind us, giving way to one of the final stages of development of our vineyards, which already have their first shoots that look like tiny bunches of grapes.

What happens in the vineyards in spring?

We have all heard about the grape harvest, the time of harvesting the grapes, but little is known about the process prior to this, and the fact is that the appearance of the fruits begins precisely at this time. During the period that extends between September and December, in the vineyards occur three key phenomena: budding, flowering and fruit set.

The beginning of sprouting varies depending on the strain. and in the case of our vineyards, Chardonnay begins, then Merlot, followed by Syrah and ending with Cabernet. After this the beginning of the flower begins and then the setting . In this last stage, the small fruit is formed , in this case, our precious grapes. Once their function has been fulfilled, the anthers (which generate pollen) fall off and only the small fruit remains, which little by little grows and gains some size.

How is our 2020 harvest coming along?

Our Agronomist in charge of the Buin vineyards, David Guerra, points out that, Due to the stability of temperatures , where there have been no drops below 2°C or 3°C, between the end of September and the beginning of October in Alto Maipo, The berries in our vineyards show an even growth . That is, all the berries are the same size, which bodes well for a prosperous grape harvest season!

We invite you to visit us and enjoy this spring as much as we are doing.
