The Macul and Buin properties, in the Alto Maipo subregion, being in the foothills of the Andes Mountains and due to their favorable height above sea level, have exceptional characteristics for wine production. This, added to the careful management of the vineyards, allows us to create wines of particular elegance and complexity.
The wines produced by Cousiño Macul are made from 9 varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot – Syrah – Cabernet Franc – Petit Verdot – Chardonnay – Sauvignon Gris – Sauvignon Blanc – Riesling – Carménère. All our vineyards are planted on their own foot, without rootstocks, and more than 60% of our production corresponds to red wines.
A key element that marks the character and historical seal of our strains is that the species for the new plantations come from traditional mass selections, which we carry out in our own nurseries for a period of 10 years. This methodical selection has allowed the preservation of unique and highly valuable genetic material brought to Chile by Luis Cousiño in 1860, including varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Pauillac region in the Upper Medoc, Chardonnay from Burgundy, and Sauvignon Vert and Martillac Semillon in Graves.
In order to guarantee quality and excellence, the team in charge of managing the vineyards takes care of every detail to obtain top-level grapes, the cornerstone on which our business is based. At this stage, experience and knowledge are essential to properly carry out the specific technical procedures depending on the time of year.
Furthermore, at Cousiño Macul we work hand in hand with the concepts of sustainable agriculture and minimal intervention management, which allows us to reduce the use of agrochemicals, to protect the nobility of our land and wines. An initiative that prioritizes caring for the environment and is not limited to the first production phase, but transcends the entire value chain.
