Old Reserves: 90 years of the most emblematic line of Cousiño Macul

It all began with the 1927 Cabernet Sauvignon harvest. Today, 90 years later, the Antiguas Reservas line is as alive as ever and with 3 more varieties: Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah.

These were years in which wine had not yet reached the level of perfection and quality that we can appreciate today. Don Arturo Cousiño Lyon, at that time in charge of Viña Cousiño Macul, asked the Chief Oenologist to produce a wine that he could drink on a daily basis, but that could also be stored for a while in his cellars. This is how Antiguas Reservas, Cousiño Macul's most emblematic line of wines, was born from the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest of 1927.

With its 2017 vintage, Antiguas Reservas celebrated 90 years in the winery's portfolio, on the tables of Chileans and the world, delivering a wine that seeks to reflect the maturity of the New World and the elegance of traditional wines.

“It is not only the emblematic wine of our vineyard, but it is also a quality standard. This means that we do not produce any strain under the name Antiguas Reservas if we do not consider it to be a wine of a higher quality than other lines we have. It has to be a memorable wine,” says Verónica Cousiño, Commercial Manager of Viña Cousiño Macul and part of the seventh generation that today works in the family business.

Regarding the incorporation of new strains, in 1969 the first Chardonnay Antiguas Reservas was produced, and until 2001, they were the only two varieties in the line, along with Cabernet Sauvignon. That year, the family and the winemaking team decided that Merlot had reached such a level of perfection that it could now be called Antiguas Reservas. Later, Syrah was added.

These wines are 100% produced by our own vineyards in Macul and Paine and seek to maintain, now and always, the classic and elegant style that characterizes us so much.
